Hot dip galvanizing

A plant was opened and the first metal structure was galvanized in November 21, 2005. The equipment of three world-known producers, “Westech” (USA), “KOrner” (Austria) and “W.Pilling” (Germany) is installed at hot dip galvanizing plant. Such equipment allows galvanizing of metal structures with overall dimensions of 12.5 * 1.4 * 3.2 and weight of up to 3 tons at the thickness of zinc coat from 40 to 200 µm. Designed capacity is 25 kt of metal structures per year.

Before galvanizing the metal structures shall be prepared as follows:

1. Degreasing – removal of any oils and other synthetic contaminations from the article’s surface.
2. Pickling – removal of any rust and corrosion as well as chemical surface activation.
3. Washing – washout of solid metallic parts from the article’s surface and prevention of hydrochloric acid solution transfer to fluxing bath.
4. Fluxing – protection from any oxides formation at the article’s surface and residual salts removal.
5. Drying – complete drying of articles after chemical treatment and heating up to 120єC.

Zinc laid at steel in result of metal structure submersion into molten zinc (temperature at hot galvanizing bath is 445єC). Molten zinc reacts with surface of steel article and forms some layers (Gamma, Delta, Zeta, Eta) having different zinc content. The first gamma layer is the hardest layer with zinc content up to 25%. Set of all layers (from Gamma to Eta) provides required physical and mechanical properties of coating and electrochemical protection as zinc creates galvanic element contacting with steel. The element stress can lead to the zinc corrosion in terms of zinc coating crack, but it will never create steel corrosion. Other corrosion resisting systems provide either protective barrier or galvanic element. The only hot dip galvanizing combines both these advantages.

Today the orders for hot dip galvanizing mainly include metal structures of power transmission line towers, overhead constructions and constructions for road building.

Hot dip galvanizing of OAO “Uralelectromed” is approved by Lloyd’s Register Quality Assurance referring to ISO 9001:200; it is awarded with silver medal at Metal Expo.

Due to operation at full production capacity the company is working for the project to increase the capacities by building of new 14 ktpy galvalution line.
